Summary

This regional workshop held in Amman, Jordan, was designed to:Review the current fortification practices in the region and discuss strategies for regional harmonization of WHO recommendationsInform government policy-makers and millers about the WHO recommendations on wheat flour fortification and of the implications of these recommendations on premix cost, flour product properties and trade within and outside the regionOutline steps for national adaptation and adoption of the recommendations, in developing or revising national flour fortification programsIdentify national and regional approaches to improve the effectiveness of national fortification programs.See a summary of the presentations and discussions.

Participants

A total of 59 participants from 19 countries were in attendance. Attendees represented Ministries of Health, Bureau of Standards and Specifications and the milling industry in the Region, as well as United Nations agencies and other international organizations. Countries represented included Afghanistan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Islamic Republic of Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, occupied Palestinian territory, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syrian Arab Republic, Sudan, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
