Summary

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (US CDC) “We Were There” series features personal perspectives from CDC researchers on past and present historically important, CDC-led epidemiologic and laboratory investigations. This presentation celebrates 40 years of public health collaborations between the US and China and highlights the success of three key ongoing programs: Influenza, Birth Defects, and the Chinese Field Epidemiology Training Program (CFETP).

FFI Director Scott Montgomery presented on trends in folic acid fortification and neural tube defect (NTD) prevention since the China CDC and US CDC's work in the 1990s proving that folic acid alone can prevent NTDs.
