Europe and Central Asia: What We Do
We work in Europe on a regional basis, helping countries develop sustainable action plans for implementing, monitoring, or improving national wheat flour fortification programs.
FFI in action
In coordination with the Food Safety Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, UNICEF, and USAID, FFI led a five-day Training of Trainers workshop where representatives from eight Eastern European countries--Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan--developed skills in promoting, planning, implementing, and monitoring wheat flour fortification.
Through FFI’s and other partners’ support:
- Uzbekistan implemented revised wheat flour fortification standards to increase the amount of thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, and zinc added, include vitamin B12 and change the type of iron added to a more digestible form.
- Tajikistan approved legislation on wheat flour fortification that ensures imported flour is fortified to meet national standards.
- Azerbaijan created legislation that mandates wheat flour fortification.
- Georgia has drafted plans to begin mandatory fortification
